Despite widespread acclaim and massive success, Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be getting any DLC — and Larian Studios says that’s by design. While many fans were hoping for expansions or follow-up campaigns, studio head Swen Vincke recently confirmed that the team is shifting its focus to “crazy ambitious” new projects instead.
In an interview with GameSpot, Vincke addressed the lack of DLC directly:
“We tried to be in the DLC business, but we weren’t passionate about it,” he said. “You need a happy developer for a happy player.”
That simple principle — putting developer well-being over revenue — sits at the heart of Larian’s creative direction. And while the decision may sting for fans eager to explore more of the Forgotten Realms, it’s a bold, values-driven move that prioritizes quality, sustainability, and genuine passion in game development.
Why Baldur’s Gate 3 Won’t Get DLC
Vincke acknowledged that DLC might’ve made financial sense. “We heard it’s what we’re supposed to do,” he explained, adding that DLC could have been a lucrative path. But the spark just wasn’t there. “The team is more excited about what we’re working on now than about revisiting Baldur’s Gate 3,” he added.
Though Larian Studios continued supporting BG3 with robust patches — including new subclasses and mechanical tweaks — the narrative arc has reached its end. With Patch 8 now out, the studio is fully focused on the future.
Standing Up for Developers — and Against Industry Norms
Larian’s stance contrasts sharply with recent industry trends, where mass layoffs and crunch culture have become far too common. Vincke has publicly criticized corporate greed in the gaming sector, while Larian’s publishing director, Michael Douse, invited laid-off developers to join the studio’s ranks.
Larian did experience some crunch to get Baldur’s Gate 3 out the door — but overall, it has maintained a reputation for treating its devs better than most.
“We’re trying to reimagine what sustainable game development looks like,” Vincke said. “It’s about creating a culture where the people building the worlds love what they’re doing.”
What’s Next for Larian Studios?
While the studio remains tight-lipped, Vincke describes their next game as “crazy ambitious.” There’s no official title or release window yet, and based on the multi-year development of Baldur’s Gate 3, fans may have a long wait.
Still, excitement is building. If the next project is anything like BG3, it’ll likely push the boundaries of what RPGs — and games as a whole — can achieve.
